On the 82nd anniversary of the martyrdom of Tunisian citizens for the sake of a Tunisian Parliament: Associations call for a cessation of the use of the People’s Assembly to serve personal and parties’ interests over the higher interests of the Tunisian people

The undersigned associations are calling the members of the People’s Assembly, to seize prioritizing personal and partisan interests and gasping for privileges and political influence over the higher interests of the Tunisian people.

The above mentioned associations consider the persistence of this behavior shown by many members of the Parliament a disregard for the huge sacrifices made by thousands of martyrs and their families for the independence of Tunisia and the freedom of the Republic’s daughters and sons, and in the forefront of the 22 martyrs who fell, on April 9, 1938 in Tunisia by the bullets of the French occupation, during a demonstration when hundreds of Tunisian women and men have claimed the right to freedom and to a Tunisian parliament. This event was followed by a massive wave of repression and arrests among the leaders and supporters of the national movement.

The signatory associations, condemn the continuation of this shameful and negatively-affecting behavior on the Tunisian people, in times during which the medical and paramedical staff, the public health agents and employees are making tremendous efforts to support various state institutions, especially with the Corona pandemic that threatens the lives of Tunisian daughters and sons, in a way that has never been witnessed before in Tunisia’s modern history.

The associations also salute the various state bodies and civil society organizations involved in preventing and mitigating the effects of this pandemic and preserving the country’s security. They call for more vigilance in these difficult circumstances, so as not to take advantage of the spread of COVID-19 to restrict individual freedoms or to return to political tyranny.
