Tunisia: Democratic transition & human rights support center (DAAM) Welcomes the Ratification of the Organic Law on the Right of Access to Information

Democratic transition & human rights support center (DAAM) has Kept abreast of the debate among the various parties on the organic law enshrining the right of access to information, which has been approved by of the Tunisian House of Representatives on March 11, 2016.

At the time where (DAAM) records with satisfaction that the final version of the law was responsive to the aspirations of the Tunisian society in general, the organizations and the proficient associations in order to establish one of the most important constitutional principles stipulated in Article 32 of the Constitution, that is to say the right of access to information, the center calls the concerned authorities to expedite the enactment of regulatory orders for the proper use of this right in particular from the public, and in order to enable the administration from the legal mechanisms to respond to the requests submitted to it in the purpose.

Democratic transition & human rights support center (DAAM) highlights also the following points:

• The acknowledgement of the importance of this law in the consecration of transparency, good governance and anti-corruption.
• Finding out how serious the MPs are in dealing with the civil society proposals, especially the drafting of Article 24 related to the exceptions of the right to access to information, which has made the legal text clear and in line with relevant international standards.
• Underscore the fact that the ratification of this law confirms the reliability of the legislative process in building up the constitutional principles, and in moving forward in achieving a democratic transition, based on reforming the legislative system, and the improvement of the administration’s performance in the way that would achieve the public interest.
