Integrating Human Rights and gender equality principles in political parties’ programs and policies in Tunisia and Libya-external visits

Within the framework of the project of “Integrating Human rights and gender equality principles in political parties’ programs and policies in Tunisia and Libya”, and with the support of the European Endowment For Democracy, an advisory workshop was held from the 11th to the 17th of July, in which human rights activists, politicians, journalists, and political parties as well as civil society youth leaders from Tunisia and Libya in order to prepare a guide for political parties to integrate the principles of human rights and gender equality in their programs and policies.

The workshop included field visits as the participants visited the National Anti Corruption Commission Inlucc where they were received by Mr. Koutheir Bouallegue, the Secretary General of the Commission, who discussed with the attendees the working conditions, challenges, programs, and orientations of the commission.

The participants also visited the International Center for Transitional Justice (ICTJ)) where they were received by Mrs. Salwa El Gantri the Director of the Center’s office in Tunisia, who presented the center’s programs and discussed with participants the evolution of the transitional_justice process in Tunisia and interacted with them in answering their questions regarding the course or the points related to the structure of the guide. After that the participants visited the Arab Institute for Human Rights where they were received by Mr. Abdelbasset Ben Hassen the president of the institute and Ms. Lamia Grar the director of the institute and Dr. Chekir Hafidha member of the scientific committee. Mr. AbdElbasset Ben Hassan the president of the institute discussed the situation of Human Rights as well as the institute’s vision and programs and the different programs regarding youth, citizenship, political parties, and the institute’s program in Libya.

Mrs.Hafidha Chkir answered the participants questions regarding the entrances and obstacles of working with political parties in the process of integrating gender equality principles. Ms. Lamia Garrar accompanied the delegation of the DAAM center during their tour in Dar Essayda and briefed them about the various departments of the Institute.

The participants also visited the headquarters of Ennahdha International Page (Official) where they were received by Mrs.Mehrezia Labidi member of parliament who is responsible of the relationship with civil society,, Mr. Noureddine Arabaowi, the head of the political bureau, Mr. Abdel-Karim Harouni, Chairman of the party’s Shura Council, Mr. Lotfi Zaitoun, Political Advisor to the President of the party, and a number of women MPs from the party who presented the party’s view regarding human rights system and interacted with participants on several current issues related to human rights situation in Tunisia.
